One Year of U&K Salon: Reflections, Lessons, and Gratitude

Have you ever looked back at a year and thought, “Wow, so much happened—and yet, it feels like just yesterday”? That’s exactly how we feel at U&K Salon right now. This month is a special one for us: our salon officially marks its one-year anniversary since our grand opening on September 16, 2024.

Opening a business is never easy, and keeping it thriving is even harder. Maybe you’ve wondered: how do salons stay consistent in service and quality? What does it take to earn trust in a neighborhood like Brooklyn? Is there ever really an “easy” way to succeed? We’ve asked ourselves those same questions this past year, and the journey has been full of challenges, learning curves, and beautiful moments with our clients.

From the stylist’s chair, here’s what we’ve learned in our first year:

• Consistency is everything. There’s no shortcut to building trust. Every haircut, every color, every shampoo adds up to how people see you.

• Action matters more than words. Success only comes by doing, every single day.

• Community trust is precious. Our neighbors and loyal clients put their confidence in us, and we feel that responsibility deeply. It pushes us to deliver our best work, every time.

• There’s no “easy way.” Behind every hairstyle that looks effortless is hours of training, years of experience, and constant dedication.

Last year, when we hosted our opening party, it was a joyful day but also filled with the weight of responsibility. We knew starting a salon in Brooklyn meant people were trusting us with not only their hair, but also their time, money, and confidence.

There were moments of doubt—“Am I enough?”—but looking back now, one year later, the answer is clear: we’re growing, we’re learning, and we’re moving forward. This first year taught us that nothing happens without effort. And while we still have more to learn in our “second term,” we’re proud of how far we’ve come.
